The Origin of Kamancha Restaurant: Bringing Armenian Cuisine and Live Music Together

An Idea Inspired by Guests

Kamancha’s story began after Areg Gevorgyan had already founded ARMAT restaurant. Working in hospitality gave him the opportunity to listen to guests, understand their preferences, and recognize a demand that was not yet fully met.

That demand was clear: people wanted an Armenian restaurant where they could enjoy traditional dishes alongside live music. At the time, Areg saw a gap in central Yerevan for a place offering precisely that combination.

This observation inspired a new restaurant concept—a setting where Armenian cuisine and music would complement each other, and where families and friends could gather to experience the warmth of Armenian hospitality.

In 2019, that idea became a reality with the opening of Kamancha.

A Name That Reflected the Concept

Choosing the restaurant’s name was closely tied to its identity. Since music would play an important role in the experience, the name needed to express that connection while reflecting the restaurant’s Armenian character.

“Kamancha” captured both elements: Armenian culture and music. From the first introduction, it offered a sense of the atmosphere guests could expect inside.

Live music became an integral part of the restaurant. Together with traditional food and conversation around the table, it helped create the atmosphere that guests would come to associate with Kamancha.

A Warm Welcome—and a Reason to Return

Yerevan welcomed Kamancha enthusiastically. The opening attracted a strong response, and the restaurant soon began welcoming many guests. An idea born from listening to people’s wishes had found its audience.

The atmosphere became one of the main reasons guests returned. At Kamancha, they found a warm setting for families and friends, with a distinctly Armenian spirit. The occasions varied, but the desire to spend time together remained the same.

That feeling developed throughout each visit—from conversations around the table to the live music. Traditional Armenian cuisine brought people together, while the setting allowed them to relax and enjoy each other’s company.

The initial interest gradually became a lasting connection. Guests returned and chose Kamancha again for their next gathering.

Learning Through Experience

Despite his experience founding ARMAT, Kamancha represented a new direction for Areg Gevorgyan. It was his first Armenian restaurant, and the early stages brought many challenges.

Once the idea became a working restaurant, the daily task was to understand how the concept performed in practice, what guests expected, and where improvements were needed. Experience grew through everyday work, while each challenge called for decisions and practical solutions.

The greatest test, however, was still ahead. The pandemic changed the way the entire hospitality industry operated, and Kamancha faced those difficulties too.

The Pandemic: Finding a New Way to Work

The COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown became the most difficult period in Kamancha’s history. A restaurant built around gathering people and sharing experiences suddenly had to operate under restrictions.

It was a major blow to the hospitality industry. For Kamancha, the challenge was to continue working and maintain its connection with guests.

The response was to establish Kamancha’s delivery service. The restaurant’s dishes began reaching guests at home, allowing operations to continue when welcoming diners in the usual way was restricted.

Launching delivery became an important part of overcoming the pandemic. It addressed an immediate problem while creating a new direction for the business.

2023: A Turning Point in Marketing Strategy

After the pandemic, Kamancha faced another serious challenge: the market downturn of 2023. These conditions called for a review of existing approaches and a clear understanding of what needed to change to support further development.

The decision was made to change Kamancha’s entire marketing strategy. This was a significant step, affecting the restaurant’s overall approach to promotion and communication with guests.

It proved to be one of the most important decisions in Kamancha’s development. The new approach led to substantial improvements and growth, setting the restaurant on a new course.

The experience of 2023 reinforced the importance of adapting at the right time. For Kamancha, moving forward meant preserving its identity while reconsidering the methods it used to reach its guests.

Kamancha’s Story Continues

Kamancha began with a clear ambition: to create a restaurant in Yerevan where traditional Armenian cuisine and live music would come together in a warm, welcoming setting.

The journey that started in 2019 has included both an enthusiastic reception and difficult challenges. The pandemic led to the creation of the delivery service, while the market downturn of 2023 prompted a new marketing strategy and a further phase of growth.

Guests remain at the heart of this story. Their wishes inspired the original idea, and their return visits gave Kamancha the foundation to keep developing. Around Armenian food, live music, and warm gatherings, Kamancha’s story continues.
